How Carsharing differs from traditional car rentals:

• Carsharing is not limited by office hours
• Reservation, pickup, and return is all self-service
• Cars can be rented by the minute, hour, or day
• Users are pre-approved members 
• Vehicle locations are often close to public transit
• Minimum Insurance but not: uninsured, under-insured or personal injury protection insurance.
• Fuel costs are included in the rates.
• Vehicles are not always serviced (cleaning, fueling) after each use

Spring 2013:

• 1 modo car in Richmond (Brighouse Station) 
• Car2Go has 2 cars in Kwantlen Polytechnic University parking lot (8771 Landsdowne, Richmond, stalls 491, 492)
• Car-share firms can pay the City of Richmond $300 per year for the privilege of using public parking, and spaces will be allocated for two-year terms. If the site is paid parking, the cost is higher, according to the average annual revenue the space generates.
• modo has 9000 members and 280 cars , mostly in Vancouver
• typically pay about $13 an hour, with gas and parking costs included.(approx double public transit cost)
• Unlike Modo and Zipcar vehicles – which must be returned to their home parking stall – Car2Go's two-seater Smart cars can be taken on one-way trips and left on any residential street, provided it's north of 49th Avenue and west of Renfrew in Vancouver.

 peer-to-peer car sharing.:

• San Francisco-based Getaround, which handles the transaction and provides insurance for a 40 per cent commission.
• Getaround claims its owner members earn an average of $350 a month and the service saw huge growth this summer after launching in Portland.
• owners can limit who they rent their car to – perhaps only their Facebook friends or people they know through church.
•  Getaround's iPhone app remotely unlocks a car once it's rented.
• Owners set their own prices and a rating system shows who has a trustworthy track record of past rentals.
• Getaround co-founder Jessica Scorpio said Metro Vancouver is "high on our list" of possible expansion areas but said there are no specific plans yet.
• The service's insurance coverage system would need ICBC's approval so members are shielded from all liability
•  a potential game changer that could rapidly pump up the number of rentable vehicles in Richmond

This figure is based on the cost of running a 2012 Toyota Camry, 18,000 km a year, with the cost of gas set to $1.23/litre, with regular maintenance and repair.

corporate car-sharing services, though positive steps toward reducing emissions and dependence on car ownership, are only nominally about “sharing.” They’re really just a more streamlined version of car rental, with better apps and more options for pickup and drop-off.

• RelayRides does not offer peer-to-peer rentals in Canada. However, renters in the U.S. are able to drive RelayRides rentals into Canada and Canadians visiting the U.S. are able to rent as well. (April 2013)
• ICBC says that peer-to-peer renting is legal in BC. (april 2013 email) "In fact, many individuals rent their vehicles out to others, and a good example of this is the private rental of motor homes and recreational trailers."

 

"a vehicle needs to be insured in the proper rate class, and the owner of the vehicle is still responsible for injuries or damage caused by people renting their car. Therefore, it is important for the owner to carry adequate limits of third-party liability insurance and keep in mind that any claims they make under their policy might affect future insurance premiums.

We also suggest that an owner also consider getting a conversion coverage policy, which can be purchased at anyAutoplan broker’s office.  This policy will protect the vehicle owner in case the vehicle renter does not return the vehicle (in other words,. steals it).  Standard Autoplan insurance does not include conversion coverage, so we suggest that anyone thinking of renting their vehicle out to others look into getting this additional coverage."
